Sian Ka’an is located in Tulum, Quintana Roo, it’s home to a remarkably rich flora and fauna comprising more than 300 species of birds, as well as a large number of the region’s characteristic terrestrial vertebrates, which cohabit in the diverse environment formed by its complex hydrological system.
This biosphere it’s the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean that contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef.
The area is also home to 115 species of mammals, 90 species of native bees, 74 species of beetles, 276 species of crustaceans, and 318 species of butterflies. The barrier reef is made up of more than 84 species of coral, including the “brain coral” which can reach up to seven meters in diameter.
